Hummingbird Hideaway Policies

We only have one rental cottage and from time to time make it available to individuals with allergies. As a result, we have put the following in place to help us do so:

  • We cannot accommodate pets.
  • We cannot accommodate smoking in the house. There is a covered porch and a deck where our guests can smoke.
  • All of the kitchen facilities are clean and ready to use. We ask that what you use be cleaned and returned as you found it when you arrived. This does not involve cleaning the house. Simply clean anything you use in the kitchen by loading and starting the dishwasher before you leave. We will unload it when the cycle is over.
  • By staying on our property, you agree to use our facilities at your own risk. Please limit your explorations to mowed areas of grass. If you choose to venture into the woods, please consult us first on hazards to be aware of. If you plan on treks through the woods, a good supply of insect repellant is advised!

Once you book your stay with us, we will get a map to you that explains in detail how to get here.

If you'd like some information on a specific weekend, please give us an email at aeunpu@gmail.com or call us at 573-637-2050.

We look forward to serving your Black River vacation needs!

Hummingbird Hideaway Now Open!

It is with great pleasure (and exhaustion) that I announce that Hummingbird Hideaway at Peola Valley is now open for business! We completed the main finishing touches last Thursday, April 23rd and just saw our first weekend guests off this morning. They seemed to like it very much.

I am also happy to report that the hummingbirds are back now in full force. We have about 50 or so at this point and should continue to see them grow in number over the next few weeks. I have enjoyed taking a break now and then on the front porch to sit down and just watch them. They are so very territorial. It's fun to watch them interact with one another.

We are still in the process of determining our nightly rates and some other details that we'll post once we have everything lined up. Pictures are coming soon, too!

The main points about Hummingbird Hideaway are as follows:
  • Bedroom 1-king bed (sleeps 2)
  • Bedroom 2-bunk bed and single bed (sleeps 3)
  • 1 Bathroom-shower, sink, toilet
  • Fully equipped Kitchen-full-size microwave, full-size oven, dishwasher, double sink, full-size regrigerator, eating area
  • Living Room
  • Deck
  • Porch
  • Babbling brook audible most times of the year from the front porch
  • Mostly wheelchair accessible (shower would be tough to access at this point, but we're working on it!)
  • Centrally heated
  • Window A/C
If you'd like some information on a specific weekend, please give us an email at aeunpu@gmail.com or call us at 573-637-2050. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hummingbird Hideaway Opens Soon!

Hello! Andrew Eunpu here. My wife Christy and I moved to Lesterville in August of 2008 so that I could begin teaching Music at Lesterville R-IV Public School. Little did we know that the place we would purchase and come to know as home would have been set up perfectly, in a perfect location to welcome friends and visitors alike to share in the beautiful setting we now call home. The property was owned previously by Lee and Pam Ferber who ran Peola Valley Pottery (http://www.peolavalley.com/). Lee is a master potter. I'm not sure if I've got the terminology right, but he sure knows how to create wonderful pottery. He ran a store on the property and that is the structure we are converting over into a weekend (or weekday!) getaway cottage. The valley we live in has a long tradition of hummingbird cultivation (Lee and Pam fed them over a ton of sugar water of the years...read about it at http://www.peolavalley.com/Humin.html) and we are now taking up the baton to pick up where they left off.

Right now, Spring is on its way and we are busy putting the finishing touches on Hummingbird Hideaway. I've spent the Winter months doing the framing of new walls, tearing out a couple walls, installing plumbing and electric and hanging drywall. I'm now in the home stretch of taping and mudding the drywall and we anticipate to be officially open for visitors some time aroud the middle of April. Please stay tuned for more details and pictures!
